Photo Album of Barn Quilts
of Washington County, Iowa
Making a barn quilt block isn't
"just as simple" as painting wood and thinking it would easily be hung on any
structure.
Our committee experienced the following, and chose to depict it in photos.
We will continue to update our website, but these photos will remain
collectively in our archives as steps to success.
Committee efforts -
Many hours of locating barns throughout Washington County, our Barn Selection
Committee began. They started photographing barns, locating owners,
and securing the historical information behind the barns from the owners.
Those initial steps comprised Washington
County's Barn Quilts endeavors.. Often, these committee
persons delved into painting, and working so hard to hang the final 8' X 8'
wooden blocks.
A Quilt Block committee then studied appropriate blocks for application
to barns in the first of four historical loops that would take place in
Washington County. The committee carefully guided coordination of the
colors, blocks and patterns, having reason associated with the theme of the
project. No barn or corn crib would have a block not appropriately
associated with time
or theme. Our barn owners had a selection
process, and helped in choices of colors for their barn quilt block.
The Committee Construction Crew then began stages of preparing the
blocks construction, priming, etc. Careful design has gone into and development has been made for
sheltering our barn owners' blocks from birds' nesting/deposits, thanks to our
Construction Crew.
Artist/block drawing committee
planned for the block's painting colors and steps, and
documenting their efforts through photography became important.
A Fundraising Committee, a very-hard job for a person or committee to
undertake developed. Barn Quilts of Washington County, Iowa was blessed to
have a pro- or no part of this endeavor could have been possible. Without this
committee, the project could not have come to fruition.
There are SO many attributes of fundraising that aren't actually photographed,
but events, photos, news releases, and back-bone hard work by our fundraising
chairperson has made Barn Quilts of Washington County actually (exist). 2007's successes include grants, state-and-local contributions, and
a budget plan for care/concern for our barn quilt blocks of the future.
Internet importance became an interest of our Barn Quilt Committee, and our
web-designer went to work to use all of the photos committee members took, and
composed the website you now visit.
